FLU VACCINE CAMPAIGN Flu

Influenza or 'flu' as it is usually called, is not just a bad cold.  It is a serious viral disease that, whilst as easily caught as the common cold, usually leads to more severe symptoms, in which you may not feel well for many weeks. 

On an annual basis, the surgery begins it's Flu Vaccine Campaign in October, which will help protect people before the flu season begins.  The Reception Desk will begin to arrange appointments in September for the various Flu Clinic's that are run by the GP's and Practice Nurses.

The Department of Health strongly recommends that all those aged 65 years or over, and younger people in the following at risk groups, should be vaccinated each year as they are more likely to suffer the complications of flu, like pneumonia, which can be severe or even fatal.

Diabetes

Type 1 - (insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus)

Type 2 - (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus)

Respiratory problems

Asthma

COPD

Chronic bronchitis

Emphysema

Cystic Fibrosis

Bronchiectasis

Immunosuppression

Asplenia

High dose steriods

HIV

Those treated with radio/chemotherapy

Cardiac problems

Ischaemic heart disease

Previous myocardial infarction

Heart failure

Renal disease

Chronic renal failure

Nephrotic syndrome

Transplant recipients

If you fall into one of the above recommended groups, please contact the surgery as you will be eligible to receive a free flu vaccine, which will provide you with vital protection against this years flu strain.
